PROJECT: Roof for the Pradeep Family - COMPLETED Aug 1, 2005

The rebuilding of the roof for the son of Janaka and Lalitha Pradeep.  The Pradeep's are a warm and kind-hearted family in the village of Kahawa (just north of Pereliya) who were living in a temporary shelter built on the remains of the foundation of their once lovely but modest home.  They had requested aid for their son Janaka, whose home in the Galle area (20 kilometers south) was still standing after the Tsunami but without a roof.  With the oncoming monsoon practically upon them, again time was of the essence.   An estimate of the modest cost was forwarded to TR-RSL in July 2005.  We are happy to say that with funding sent by TR-RSL in August 2005, the Pradeep home is now under roof.  Now the

PROJECT: Rebuilding of the Bandula Cement Block Workshop - COMPLETED Aug 1, 2005

Ajith Bandula of the village of Kahawa in southwestern Sri Lanka lost his cement block business in the tsunami.  A German philanthropist funded the purchase of a new cement block machine, but Mr. Bandula was without a shelter/workshop for his business.  TR-RSL successfully raised money for the building materials of for Mr. Bandula's workshop which was completed in August 2005.

PROJECT: Child and Youth Development Centre

The longterm financial and moral support for the new "Child and Youth Developement Centre" founded near the hard-hit city of Galle in southwest Sri Lanka. The school was founded in the donated boyhood home of Dr. Asoka Jayasena, a surgeon from the city of Colombo.  Dr. Jayasena and his partner Dr. Sarath Wimalaguna, also of Colombo have put together this student center as a substitute for the devastated local primary school.  Their foundation is named "People in Need Foundation" and is heartily supported by Prime Minister Rajapaksa.  The centre is a state of the art primary and pre-school which will serve over 300 homeless, parentless and displaced children of the Tsunami.  Contact would be Dr. Asoka Jayasena.

As of September 28, 2005, we have furnished the Centre with $2,000 for staff salary.

COMPLETED September 23, 2005

Mr. R.C. Somatilake, a teacher at Hikkaduwa Sri Sumangala College had his home and most of his belongings destroyed in the Tsunami.  Estimated costs of reconstruction submitted to TR-RSL on August 31, 2005 were approximately $2,000.  TR-RSL's goal was to provide 50% of the funds for this project (approx. $1,000).  TR-RSL transferred funds in September and the Somatilake family is now well on their way to completing the rebuilding of their home.

PROJECT:  Somasiri Jinadasa Elders Home

COMPLETED July 20, 2007

The expansion and outfitting of the "Somasiri Jinadasa Elders Home" in the town of Hikkaduwa in southwest Sri Lanka, just south of the devastated village of Pereliya.  The elders home is an individual
home opened up by a senior citizen for senior citizens of the area who have lost the families who were their only means of support.  In Sri Lanka, elder homes are rare as family usually support their senior members. Those without family have no recourse but to sleep on the floors of the local Buddhist temples and exist on donations of food.  The goal here is to build an addition on to the existing home in order to house a dozen or more seniors.  The contact here is Mr. Asoka Pathman, a hard working and respected member of the Hikkaduwa community. An estimate of the project will be forthcoming.

TR-RSL is very happy to report that Mr. & Mrs. Peter & Hilary Nossiter of England raised the funds ($20,000) to complete this project.  Peter Nossiter, himself a Sri Lankan Tsunami volunteer veteran is a mutual friend of Mr. Asoka Pathman, the Chairman of the Somasiri Jinadasa Foundation.  Peter was the leader of a British team which built over a score of temporary houses in the village of Kahawa, just north of Hikkaduwa in April of 2005.  Hilary Nossiter was instrumental in raising the money for the Somasiri project.   A plaque with their names was unveiled at the gala opening ceremonies.  Present at the ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Social Services & Social Welfare, Mr. Lionel Pemasiri.   Three women senior citizens, ages 80, 82 and 74 are now the new residents of the home.  Three cheers for Peter and Hilary and also Asoka Pathman for his persistence, patience and leadership in overseeing and guiding this project.

Pictures, written requests and further in-depth information are available for all of the above projects.
